FAQs

Q?

Who can use our services?

A.

We specialise specifically in helping Sole Traders. If you haven't yet decided if you wish to trade as a sole trader or a limited company, we suggest you speak with an accountant who can advise you on the tax and legal implications off each entity. But if you are going to trade as a sole trader, you're in the right place!

Q?

Can I start trading before I register with HMRC?

A.

Yes you can, but you need to register within 3 months of your start date. You also become liable to pay Class 2 National Insurance from the date you started trading, and if you leave it longer than 3 months, that will start to mount up.

Q?

What are my legal obligations if I trade as a Sole Trader?

A.

Firstly, you need to register as being self-employed. This means you will need to make your own arrangements to work out your tax and national insurance contributions, based on your profits. Our spreadsheet in the Silver Package will do this for you.

You also need to take Public Liability insurance and maybe Professional Indemnity insurance, depending on your trade. Public liability insurance covers the cost of claims made by members of the public for incidents that occur in connection with your business activities. It also covers the cost of compensation for personal injuries, loss of or damage to property. Professional Indemnity insurance covers legal costs and expenses incurred in your defence, as well as any costs that may be awarded, if you are alleged to have provided inadequate advice, services or designs that cause your client to lose money.

Q?

What support do you offer with your packages?

A.

The Bronze package is pretty straight forward, so no further support should be required.

The Silver Package - We offer you full support with the spreadsheet, and can help you with any configuration issues you have or any changes you want to make to it, at any time. We will email you a new spreadsheet annually, at the beginning of April, to correspond with the current financial year. This will contain the updated tax codes, tax and NI parameters.

The Gold Package - In addition to the above, we offer full set-up and ongoing support with our telephone answering service. We will email you with a divert number, and instructions on how to divert your calls to our specialist receptionists. You can update your details with us any number of times, and can give us instructions on how to deal with specific callers, or types of calls, and you can update your availability, holiday dates, contact emails, etc. This service can be tailored to suit your exact business needs, and doesn't incur any additional charges as long as you stay within your package limit.

Q?

What are you opening hours?

A.

Full support is offered between the hours of 09:00 and 17:30 Monday to Thursday, and between 09:00 and 17:00 on Fridays. You can contact us by email or by telephone.

Q?

What happens if I cancel my Paypal subscription?

A.

If you decide to cancel your subscription, you will still be able to access your book-keeping spreadsheet, but you will not be able to edit it any way.

As your subscription is paid in advance, your telephone answering service will cease the day before your next payment is due.

You can cancel your subscription at any time by accessing your Paypal account and stopping the regular payments to ourselves.

Q?

What make you Sole Trader Experts?

A.

We have been working with sole traders since 2003, and have helped more than 10,000 businesses since then. We started as accountants offering advice and spreadsheets, then moved into 'startup' business consultancy and then, after recognising a huge need for start-ups, launched our in-house telephone answering service in 2005. All of our services are based in the UK, and provided by real people.
